The mandate of the IITE Institute is to become the leading institute that guides and contributes to the development of Somalia’s primary development sectors i.e., the livestock, agriculture, and fishery through the introduction of student-initiated startups. The youth should drive the development of Somalia.
This requires the contribution of experts in the respective fields that the institute aspires to innovate and contribute. Therefore, SIMAD University invited senior business leaders and academicians to form and act as the Advisory Board of the IITE Institute. The Board comprises the following members:
Professor SUZUKI Kanichiro
Professor SUZUKI Kanichiro is an entrepreneurship and innovation professor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) in Japan. He engaged in more than 20-year experience in research and consulting on corporate management in Nomura Research Institute before starting up his own biotechnology venture company, GNI Group, in Silicon Valley, USA, in 2001, and subsequently making it go public in TSE, Japan, in 2007.
Hassan Bashir, Takaful Africa Group
In 1997, Bashir founded an insurance brokerage company. Later on, after completing his MBA in 2002, he divested from the brokerage business, and, together with a friend started a company called Soliton Telmec, which provided the background research, initial training and financing to create what would become Kenya’s first registered fully Sharia-compliant insurance company, Takaful Insurance of Africa (TIA), in 2011.
Bashir spent years developing the model for TIA and fundraising, eventually pulling together US$6m from individual and institutional investors, and obtaining approval from regulatory authorities.
Today, Bashir heads the Takaful Africa Group, which has since expanded to Somalia and is eyeing other markets in the region. Last year, the firm recorded about $8m in premiums. Bashir expects that number to grow to $12m.
